At St. Gilbert School, our athletic program for grades 5 through 8 is designed to nurture students both physically and spiritually, while preparing them for the challenges of high school sports in 7th and 8th grade. We believe that sports are an essential part of developing well-rounded individuals who excel not only on the field/court but in all aspects of life. Our program focuses on the following key areas:

  • Teamwork - In sports, teamwork is essential because it provides a unique environment where students can develop meaningful friendships and connections with their peers. As athletes work together toward common goals, they build trust and communication skills.  When athletes work as part of a team, they quickly learn that their actions affect the entire group. Whether it’s showing up to practice on time, putting in the effort, or encouraging others, teamwork requires each individual to be accountable to the team. This sense of responsibility teaches valuable life lessons about commitment, dedication, and the importance of contributing to a collective effort. Athletes learn that their success is not just about individual performance, but about how they work with others to achieve common goals.

  • Mental Growth - Sports offer an ideal platform to enhance mental toughness, resilience, and focus. Through consistent practice and competition, our students learn the importance of determination, teamwork, and perseverance. They are encouraged to overcome challenges, set goals, and strive for personal improvement. Our volunteer coaches emphasize the development of a strong, positive mindset that is essential for success both in sports and in life.

  • Physical Development Our athletic program offers a wide range of sports to help students develop their physical abilities. Whether participating in soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field, cheerleading, or cross country, students learn the importance of fitness, strength, and agility. Regular physical activity promotes overall health, coordination, and endurance, laying the foundation for success in high school athletics. Through skill-building drills and game situations, students will also enhance their understanding of sports strategies and improve their athletic performance.

  • Spiritual Growth In line with our Catholic values, we emphasize sportsmanship, respect, and integrity. Athletes are encouraged to reflect Christ-like virtues such as humility, kindness, and fair play. We view each practice and game as an opportunity to embody these values and build a positive community within our sports teams. Prayer, reflection, and discussions about the spiritual aspects of teamwork and competition help students connect their athletic pursuits to their faith and character development.

  • Preparation for High School Sports - In 7th and 8th grade our athletic program provides a strong foundation for students looking to pursue sports at the high school level. Our athletes develop the skills, discipline, and work ethic needed to excel in more competitive environments. By fostering an understanding of teamwork, leadership, and commitment, we prepare our athletes to transition into high school sports with confidence and readiness.

  • Character Building - At the heart of our athletic program is the development of character. We aim to cultivate individuals who are not only successful athletes but also compassionate teammates, leaders, and community members. Through sports, students will learn the importance of cooperation, accountability, and respecting others—qualities that will serve them well throughout their lives.

At St. Gilbert School, we are proud to offer an athletic experience that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual development, while equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in high school sports and beyond. We believe that through sports, our students will grow in faith, fitness, and character, and be inspired to strive for excellence in all areas of life.
